Nigeria has a place in three of the four women’s award categories unveiled by the Confederation of African Football on Tuesday, 3 November. The Super Falcons are among the national teams nominated, while three Nigerian footballers appear on the goalkeeper and young-player lists. The announcement identifies contenders; it does not name the winners.
Christiana Uzoma is Nigeria’s nominee for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year. Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi are nominated for Women’s Young Player of the Year. Each of those lists contains ten names, so the two Nigerian forwards are competing in the same category rather than being nominated for separate prizes.
The national-team list places Nigeria alongside Algeria, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Morocco and South Africa. Team recognition is separate from an individual player’s nomination. Nigeria’s inclusion in that category therefore should not be confused with a Nigerian winning the main individual award or with a new result in an international match.
No Nigerian is on the ten-player Women’s Player of the Year list announced on Tuesday. That group includes Malawi’s Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga, South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbra Banda. Cameroon’s Michaely Bihina appears in both the main player and goalkeeper categories, while Senegal’s Adji Ndiaye appears in the goalkeeper and young-player categories.
Punch and Daily Post report that the award ceremony is scheduled for Monday, 7 December, in Lagos. That is a future event, not an awards presentation that has already taken place. The Nigerian nominations in the three categories are confirmed in the published lists; the announcement provides no basis for treating any nominee as the eventual winner.
What it means for you. Nigerian supporters can follow three distinct award races: the Super Falcons for team of the year, Uzoma for goalkeeper, and Akekoromowei and Adegbuyi for young player. When sharing a celebratory headline, keep the category and the word “nominated” attached. A shortlist recognises a contender, but it is not a trophy, and this announcement does not establish that any of the nominees will attend the ceremony.
