Nigeria are through to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after a 2–1 victory over Mexico on Thursday. Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan supplied the goals that kept the Flamingos’ campaign moving into the decisive stages.

Umejiaku put Nigeria ahead in the 39th minute. Dunstan added the second in the 70th, giving the team a two-goal advantage before Emily Delgado pulled one back for Mexico in second-half stoppage time. Nigeria held their lead to complete the last-16 win.

The result extends a recovery that began after Nigeria lost their opening group match 2–1 to Poland. The Flamingos then beat Puerto Rico 2–0 and North Korea 3–1, finishing second in Group B with six points before overcoming Mexico.

Venezuela are next, with the quarter-final scheduled for Sunday, November 1. The South Americans reached that stage by beating Germany 1–0. Nigeria now need another knockout victory to reach the semi-finals; the win over Mexico does not yet secure a medal.

The sequence of results gives the Nigerian campaign a different shape from its opening night. Three consecutive victories have followed the initial setback. Nigeria have also scored in all four matches, a useful attacking base as the remaining field gets smaller.

There is a defensive question alongside that momentum. Mexico’s late goal did not change the outcome, but it reduced the margin at the point when there was little time to respond. Protecting a lead will remain important in a competition where one poor spell can end a campaign.

For supporters, Sunday’s match is the next clear milestone. The group stage and the last 16 are now behind Nigeria, and the task changes again: carry the confidence of the recent wins into a new opponent without assuming that earlier results will decide the next game.
