Alex Iwobi’s corner led to Fulham’s equaliser as the London club drew 1–1 with Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday, 31 October 2026. Fellow Nigeria international Calvin Bassey also played. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki allowed the delivery to cross his own goal line, with the equaliser recorded as an own goal rather than a goal for Iwobi.
Nicolas Jackson had put Villa ahead in the 39th minute. Before that, John McGinn missed a penalty after a video review of a Sander Berge handball. His kick struck the crossbar. Those moments left Fulham trailing at the interval, despite creating a chance that Suzuki saved from Oscar Bobb.
Fulham responded after the break and Suzuki also saved an Iwobi header before the corner that brought the teams level. The score listing records the own goal in the 64th minute. Iwobi’s contribution was therefore important to the result even though his name did not go into the goalscorer column.
Iwobi was replaced by Tom Cairney in the 75th minute, while Bassey completed the match. For Nigerian supporters, the two players’ involvement adds a national-team connection to a club result. It does not turn the game into a Super Eagles fixture, nor establish any future selection decision for Nigeria.
Both teams still had opportunities to win. Suzuki stopped an Antonee Robinson effort, while Pau Torres headed wide at the other end late in the game. Neither side found a second goal. Each therefore took one league point; Fulham’s recovery was a draw away from home, not a victory over Villa.
Villa manager Unai Emery described the outcome as disappointing for his side but fair, acknowledging Fulham’s stronger second-half play. Fulham coach Álvaro Arbeloa praised his team’s character and ambition after the break. The result gives a concrete example of Iwobi influencing a match through a delivery into the penalty area, while the official scoring distinction remains essential: Suzuki’s own goal settled the final score at 1–1.
