A court judgment can have a long life after the parties leave the courtroom, provided that the people who need it can find it. That was one question raised at the opening of Lagos State’s Centre for Legal Study, Research and Training in Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday, 4 November.

The state Ministry of Justice established the centre for professional training, research and work on policy. Lawal Pedro, the state attorney-general and commissioner for justice, said those activities should help the people who interpret and administer state laws keep their knowledge up to date. The opening brought together lawyers, judges and public officials.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana proposed a concrete use for the centre. He urged the ministry to preserve important judgments and historical legal materials so that researchers could consult them. He cited a 1921 decision involving Amodu Tijani as an example of the older material that still matters to arguments about land in Lagos.

Falana was making a case for a collection. His intervention at the opening did not establish that a complete archive is already available to readers. At the entrance, the centre has a different kind of historical record: a roll honouring former senior officials of the ministry for their service.

Pedro also set out a plan for running the institution. The ministry intends to incorporate it as a non-profit organisation under a partnership with the private sector. The proposed division of work would give government responsibility for policy direction and oversight, with partners expected to contribute funding and technical expertise. The opening ceremony and completion of those arrangements are separate milestones.

What it means for you. A lawyer or student interested in using a particular judgment should check whether the centre holds it and what access is available. A professional training centre is different from a court receiving a case. The announcement described its research and training functions without publishing a timetable of courses or terms for consulting its materials.
