By the time Ademola Lookman stepped onto the pitch in Madrid on Tuesday, Atlético were chasing the game. With the score level at the interval, the Nigerian forward had watched from the bench as Bayern Munich finally broke through. His side went on to lose the Champions League fixture 2–0 at home on 3 November.
The opening half offered Atlético two different routes to goal. Julián Álvarez curled an early attempt wide. Later, Marc Pubill sent the ball in for Alexander Sørloth, who could not steer it on target. At the other end, Harry Kane and Josip Stanišić also went close. Neither goalkeeper had been beaten when the teams left the pitch.
Bayern found a way past Jan Oblak in the 54th minute. Robin Le Normand had the ball inside his own penalty area when Lennart Karl took it from him. There was little ground left for the Bayern attacker to cover. He beat the goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead.
Atlético made three changes in the 59th minute. Lookman took Sørloth’s place in attack. Koke came on for Le Normand and Lee Kang-in replaced Álex Baena. For Nigerian supporters following Lookman, the timing matters. His appearance came with Atlético a goal behind and just over half an hour of normal time to play.
The substitutions did not stop Bayern creating chances. Oblak diverted a deflected Dayot Upamecano effort onto the crossbar. In the 74th minute Bayern won possession again, Kane found Laimer and the defender finished past Oblak. It was the first goal scored by either team during Lookman’s time on the pitch.
Bayern put the ball in the net once more, but Upamecano’s effort was disallowed. The two goals that counted both came after the break, from different scorers. Atlético ended the night without a goal and without a point from this league-phase match.
