Three figures in NNPC Limited’s latest monthly report answer three different questions about Nigeria’s national oil company. The summary, released on 3 November, puts September revenue at ₦4.608 trillion and profit after tax at ₦509 billion. A much larger figure in the same document covers payments made over a longer period.
Revenue measures what the company recorded from its activities before costs are deducted. Profit after tax is what remained after expenses and tax. On those figures, NNPC reported roughly ₦11 of profit for every ₦100 of September revenue. That calculation describes the whole business for one month. It does not give the margin on a litre of petrol.
NNPC put statutory payments for January through September at ₦11.14 trillion. That number cannot be compared directly with September profit as though both measured money earned in the same month. It also does not tell a reader how much of September’s profit could be distributed. The company describes the financial, sales and production figures as provisional.
A similar distinction matters on the production side. Crude oil and condensate together averaged about 1.70 million barrels a day. The larger total of 3.04 million barrels of oil equivalent a day also includes natural gas, converted into a common energy unit. It therefore does not mean Nigeria produced 3.04 million barrels of crude each day.
The pipeline update distinguishes work completed from work still under way. NNPC says the River Niger crossing of the Obiafu–Obrikom–Oben gas pipeline was commissioned and brought into operation. On the separate Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano project, it reported construction and testing ahead of planned early gas delivery to Abuja. The summary does not announce that delivery has begun.
What it means for you. When comparing headlines about the company, look first at the period and then at the unit. A nine-month payment, one month’s profit and a daily estimate of energy output can all be accurate at once. None of those figures sets the price a motorist will find at an Epe filling station today.
