Godwin Obaje helped Rangers International recover a point at Rivers United on Sunday, 1 November, before his dismissal left the visitors protecting a 1–1 draw with ten men. The match at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt ended with the two clubs still level on 18 points in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Chijioke Mbaoma put Rivers ahead after Alex Oyowah took advantage of a loose back pass and supplied the ball across goal. Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh had moved out to meet Oyowah. Mbaoma later came close again, but the home side could not turn its chances into a second goal.

Rangers found their reply after Chidiebere Nwobodo attacked down the left. The hosts failed to clear the ensuing danger and Obaje headed in the rebound. Rivers appealed for offside, but the goal was allowed. Obaje subsequently received a second yellow card for dissent, leaving Rangers to defend their share of the points.

Jimoh then became central to that task. He denied further Rivers attacks as the home side tried to exploit its extra player. Rangers survived six minutes of added time. The league’s match report credits the goalkeeper with several late saves, including efforts from Oyowah and substitute Junior Aimufasa.

The published standings show Rivers first and Rangers second, both with 18 points. Rivers have played 11 matches, recording four wins, six draws and one defeat. Rangers have played nine, with five wins, three draws and one loss. Bendel Insurance and Kano Pillars also have 18 points, after ten and 11 matches respectively.

What it means for you. Supporters assessing the title race should read the matches-played column alongside the points total. Rangers have two fixtures in hand compared with Rivers, but those games still have to be played and their points have to be earned. Sunday’s draw kept the clubs together on points and left the leading group tightly packed. It did not settle who will finish the season on top.
