Umar Sadiq needed eight minutes on the pitch to settle a match that had been goalless for more than an hour. The Nigerian forward came off Valencia’s bench at Elche on Sunday, 1 November, and scored the only goal of the Spanish league game. For supporters who last saw his name in a medical bulletin, the important change was that he could take part again.
In September, Valencia had reported an injury to the muscle at the back of his right thigh during a match against Deportivo de La Coruña. The club said he missed seven rounds of league football.
At the Martínez Valero stadium he replaced Pablo Maffeo in the 61st minute. Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro stopped one effort from him before the breakthrough.
The move for the goal started with Javi Guerra finding space for Arnaut Danjuma. Danjuma picked out Sadiq inside the area. The striker took the ball past Gonzalo Villar before sending a low shot beyond Dituro in the 69th minute. It was a different kind of chance from Valencia’s earlier opportunity through César Tárrega, whose header from a corner had gone wide.
Keeping that lead took another decisive intervention at the other end. Elche had hit the crossbar through Lucas Cepeda in the first half. Valencia had a chance to add a second late on, but the move involving Dani Raba, Sadiq and Danjuma came to nothing. In added time Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski saved from Redondo to protect the three points.
What it means for you: Nigerian fans following Sadiq’s return have a useful reference point for his next appearance. He played the closing stretch as a substitute and helped decide the game. A starting place or a full 90 minutes would be a further step. Valencia listed Real Madrid at Mestalla on 7 November as their next league fixture. The team selection for that game remains a separate decision.
