Samsung announced on 2 November that Galaxy S26 Ultra phones are being added to the camera mix for skateboarding and taekwondo at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. The devices will work alongside existing broadcast cameras, according to the company. Its statement describes handheld, close-up and vertical views rather than the replacement of the television production system.
The announcement comes during the first Olympic sporting event hosted on the African continent. The Canadian Olympic Committee lists the Games from 31 October to 13 November, with competition across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly in Senegal. Its guide identifies 25 sports and disciplines, including skateboarding and taekwondo, alongside swimming, athletics and several beach sports. The event had originally been planned for 2022 before the pandemic-related postponement.
Samsung also says medal winners will be offered opportunities to take celebratory photographs with Galaxy Z Flip7 Olympic Edition devices. That is a separate activity from using S26 Ultra phones to capture competition. The distinction matters: a photograph taken around a medal ceremony is not itself a live competition broadcast, and participation in a sponsor activity does not establish a result or medal.
The company presents Dakar as a chance to learn how mobile devices could support future Games coverage. Its release is a sponsor announcement, not an independent comparison of camera quality.
It supplies no measured improvement in picture quality, no Nigerian data-price reduction and no promise that every event will receive the same additional camera angles. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the product names.
What it means for you: Nigerian viewers may encounter additional viewpoints in coverage of those two sports, but buying the named phone is not stated as a viewing requirement. The Canadian Olympic Committee directs audiences to Olympics.com and the Olympics app for streamed coverage; its separate CBC information concerns Canada. Check the event listing and local availability before planning your viewing. This announcement does not establish Nigerian television rights, free mobile data or unrestricted access to every stream.
