The Nigerian American Football Association launched SHINE Gridiron Gems in Ibadan on October 29, 2026, with a target of reaching more than 1,000 girls aged 15 to 19. Punch reported that the programme would operate in Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Imo and the Federal Capital Territory.

Flag football is one of five pillars. The others are mentorship, digital and financial literacy, education and employability pathways, and leadership development. That structure makes participation on the field one part of a wider programme, with learning and support intended to continue around the sporting activity.

NAFA chief executive Babajide Akeredolu described a bridge between secondary school and further education, skills development or employment. The programme uses a pathway described as Play, Learn, Lead, Connect and Progress. Its stated aim is to help participants carry confidence and practical knowledge into decisions beyond sport.

Support comes through Sport for Education and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa, involving the French development agency AFD, the IOC's Olympism365 initiative, Laureus Sport for Good and Comic Relief. The launch took place at The Law Hub in Ibadan, bringing programme representatives and education stakeholders together.

The organisers said they would monitor retention, skills development, mentor engagement, leadership opportunities and progress into education or employment. These are proposed measures of results. The launch itself does not establish that the programme has already reached its target or produced jobs for participants.

SHINE builds on NAFA's Gridiron Gems work introduced in April 2025 with Browns Nigeria. The new announcement gives the next programme's locations, age range and learning priorities. Future reporting can assess attendance and outcomes against those commitments rather than treating the initial participation target as a completed achievement.
