TETFund has awarded N7.5 billion to 174 research teams under the 2025 National Research Fund cycle. NUC reported the awards on June 26, 2026. The cycle year and announcement year describe different things, so the funding should not be relabelled as a separate 2026 competition.
The selection process began with concept notes, followed by full proposals from shortlisted applicants and oral defences. TETFund executive secretary Sonny Echono said a screening and monitoring committee assessed the projects before approval. The announcement describes successful selections after that process.
Individual awards range from N13.69 million to N49.98 million, depending on project scope and strategic relevance. The N7.5 billion total therefore should not be divided equally among teams to imply a standard grant. Each award supports a particular research project.
Federal University of Technology, Minna, recorded 18 successful applications, followed by Federal University of Technology, Owerri, with 11. Ahmadu Bello University received ten and the University of Ilorin eight. The report also identifies several newer federal universities among the beneficiaries.
The funded subjects span national priorities including agriculture, food security, energy, education, engineering and environmental sustainability. A broad portfolio can support different kinds of investigation, but an award count alone does not explain the quality or eventual usefulness of the resulting work.
The next evidence will come from project execution and research outputs. Funding approval is an input into that process, rather than proof of a completed innovation. Readers assessing impact should look for documented findings, delivery against project objectives and the ways institutions make results available for use.
