Students working on damaged ecosystems have until Thursday, 12 November to submit a short account of their research for a conference at the University of Lagos. The university published the invitation from its student chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration on 4 November. Its call also addresses researchers, academics and people who work in the field.
What the organisers want at this stage is an abstract of 250 to 300 words. An abstract gives a reader a concise account of the work a presenter wants to discuss. The submission address in the university notice is [email protected]. The notice does not ask applicants to send a full paper by the November deadline.
The chapter has scheduled its fifth annual conference for Wednesday, 2 December through Sunday, 6 December at the university in Akoka. Those are the dates for the meeting. They are distinct from the earlier date for sending an abstract, which comes before the programme begins.
The question behind this year’s meeting is how commitments under the 2021–2030 United Nations decade for ecosystem restoration translate into results. The call seeks research findings, ideas and practical approaches to damaged ecosystems and biodiversity loss. It welcomes submissions from different disciplines and sectors when the proposed contribution fits the theme or a related subtheme.
The invitation makes room for two decisions. People are encouraged to tell the organisers whether they intend to attend and whether they wish to present a paper. Someone interested in listening to a discussion has a different role from someone proposing to speak. Sending an abstract does not, by itself, establish that a presentation has been accepted.
What it means for you. If you want to share a field project, identify the problem you examined, what you did and what you found before cutting your account to the stated length. Check the submission address and deadline against the university notice. Anyone planning travel can use the linked conference website to check programme details.
