Biniam Girmay completed the 2024 Tour de France with three stage victories and the green jersey. The Eritrean became the first Black African rider to win a Tour stage and the first to secure one of the race's classifications. His success developed across the race rather than ending with one finish.

The first victory came in stage 3 on 1 July, with a sprint into Turin. Wins in stages 8 and 12 followed. The sequence gave the initial breakthrough competitive substance: he repeatedly finished ahead of leading sprinters, instead of relying on a single exceptional afternoon.

At the Tour's conclusion on 21 July, Girmay finished the points competition 33 points ahead of Jasper Philipsen. The green jersey recognised those accumulated points. It was a different competition from the overall time classification, so winning green should not be described as winning the Tour overall.

His Intermarché-Wanty teammates were part of the achievement. Cyclingnews reported that Laurenz Rex and Mike Teunissen waited at the final finish to congratulate him. Sprint success also depends on positioning and support before the last acceleration, making the team visible behind an individual result.

Girmay grew up in Asmara watching the Tour on television. By 2022 he had already won stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia, another Grand Tour. Those earlier experiences form part of the route to the 2024 results rather than making the Tour achievement an isolated discovery.

For Eritrean cycling, the lasting record of that summer is specific: three winning stages, a completed Tour and its points prize. Girmay's achievement widened who could be seen succeeding at the race's highest level, while giving future riders a concrete performance to study.
