Gombe State University’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has announced “active non-compliance” from 4 November over October salaries. A signed resolution dated 3 November says the action should continue until all academic staff are paid. Students therefore face uncertainty about academic activities, although the resolution does not list which duties would be withdrawn.

The branch congress said it had examined implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, alongside a memorandum of understanding with university management. It rejected the money paid as arrears under the new salary scale, saying the amounts were below members’ entitlements. That is the union’s assessment; the document does not provide individual payroll calculations.

Chairperson Mustapha Shehu Shehu and secretary Aliyu Umar Shelleng signed the resolution. It sets out two distinct payment issues: October salaries and arrears arising from the new salary scale. Settling one would not, by itself, demonstrate that the other demand had also been met. The notice does not give a total outstanding sum.

A separate resolution seeks permission from ASUU’s National Executive Council to resume the suspended strike until the correct arrears are paid. A request for permission is not evidence that the national body has granted it. The material reviewed does not establish that a full strike has started, or that every lecture, examination or university service has stopped.

What it means for you: students should confirm arrangements for their own courses with their departments before making a journey or assuming a scheduled assessment has been cancelled. The union notice contains no replacement examination timetable or new resumption date. For families budgeting for transport and accommodation, the practical distinction is between a published union decision and a confirmed change to a particular student’s schedule.

The next useful updates would be a university notice explaining academic arrangements, confirmation about salary payments, and a decision on the branch’s request to the national union. The reports reviewed did not include a management response addressing the latest resolution. Until those details are available, neither a complete campus shutdown nor a settled dispute can responsibly be presented as confirmed.
