A teacher setting a homework task in Google Classroom will be able to attach a Guided Learning session to the assignment. Google announced the international rollout on 4 November. The feature connects Classroom to a mode in the Gemini app designed to offer hints and take a learner through a problem in steps.
The teacher can select material from Classroom to give the session context. For example, a science teacher could choose the source the class has already discussed and attach an activity to a question about it. Google describes this as a way to bring the tool closer to the teacher’s curriculum. It does not guarantee that every explanation the system generates will be correct.
Opening the assigned activity takes the pupil into a focused view. Within that tab, Gemini hides its side navigation and disables new chats. The pupil stays in Guided Learning mode. That description concerns what happens inside the assigned activity. It does not mean that the teacher has locked every other tab or application on the learner’s computer.
The conversations also have an audience beyond the pupil. Teachers can read an individual transcript and see AI-generated summaries for a pupil or for the class. A transcript records the exchange, while a summary is a machine’s interpretation of it. A teacher trying to understand a mistake can inspect the conversation before drawing a conclusion from the summary.
Google lists Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus as eligible editions. The school administrator must enable Gemini for the relevant teacher and student groups or organisational units. Delivery began on 3 November and Google expects the extended rollout to take longer than 15 days for the feature to become visible across eligible accounts.
What it means for you. A school in Nigeria planning a lesson around this option can first check its edition, settings and the view in a pupil’s account. Before assigning it, tell learners which conversation their teacher can read. A missing button on the first day does not by itself show that the school is ineligible.
