For a driver travelling through Nasarawa towards Makurdi, two questions arise at a toll plaza. What is the charge for this vehicle, and will another payment be due further along the same road? The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria wants the federal government to review how often travellers are charged on the route through Keffi, Akwanga and Lafia.

In a statement dated 3 November, the group called for collection to be suspended pending an independent review. It also asked the Federal Ministry of Works to make the relevant agreements public. A suspension is what the association is requesting. Its statement does not itself change a tariff or authorise a driver to pass without paying.

The group wants disclosure of how revenue is shared, who is responsible for maintenance and how collections and spending are audited. It also called for transport unions, traders, farmers and communities along the route to be consulted. Its concern is that repeated charges could raise the cost of moving people and food. The statement does not measure how much any particular food price has changed.

Tolling on this project predates the appeal. The federal government inaugurated collection at Garaku in Nasarawa on 4 February 2025. Three days later, works minister David Umahi inspected that plaza and directed the operator to add payment points and more point-of-sale devices to ease the passage of vehicles. Those directions concerned the collection process at the time.

There has also been an earlier request from elected representatives. In February 2025, the Nasarawa House of Assembly called for one payment per trip along the corridor. A request by legislators and a later demand by a civil society group are both part of the public debate. Neither is evidence that a single-payment system has taken effect.

What it means for you. If you are pricing a journey or quoting for a delivery, check the charge displayed for your vehicle and keep the receipt for each payment. The November appeal gives no verified new price to use in a fare calculation. A change would need to be checked against a notice from the responsible authority or operator.
