A Nigerian family planning an Umrah trip for early next year may have another airline to consider, but does not yet have a new flight to book on the strength of this announcement. XEJet has identified Saudi Arabia as the first international market it wants to serve. It is aiming for the first quarter of 2027, meaning January through March.
In a statement reported on 3 November, the Nigerian carrier said it would need regulatory approvals in both countries before starting. It had yet to name the Saudi airports it intends to serve. There was also no timetable or fare in the statement. An intended launch period cannot tell a passenger which day a plane will depart.
The business case extends beyond a single pilgrimage season. Group chief operating officer Sukhjinder Mann said XEJet envisages carrying business and leisure passengers as well as people travelling for Umrah, which can be undertaken throughout the year. His assessment of year-round demand explains the choice of market. It is still the airline's expectation of future traffic.
Aircraft and connections within Nigeria are part of the plan. XEJet said additional aircraft would provide the space and seating capacity it needs for the longer journey. It also wants travellers in more Nigerian cities to reach its network. It gave no list of additional domestic destinations with confirmed starting dates.
The airline has already taken a separate domestic step. In October it began serving Abuja and Gusau in partnership with the Zamfara State Government. It described a three-day weekly schedule of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Those operating days concern the domestic route. They give no indication of when a Saudi flight would run or whether a connection could be made on one ticket.
What it means for you. Before paying for a trip that depends on this service, check the airline's published arrival airport, travel date and total fare. A traveller starting outside the departure city would also need to check how the onward booking works. Those are details to establish once XEJet publishes the route and timetable.
