Aston Villa were seven minutes into their match at Barcelona when a misplaced pass gave Lamine Yamal the ball and a chance to shoot. He took it with his left foot. It was only the first of three Barcelona goals on Tuesday, 3 November, but it changed a mark that follows players across seasons.
That goal was Yamal’s 14th in the men’s UEFA Champions League, all of them scored before his 20th birthday. Kylian Mbappé had scored 13 in the competition as a teenager. The comparison counts the goals each scored within the age limit, regardless of which season they came in. It says nothing about who has scored more over an entire career.
Barcelona put Yamal’s tally at 14 in 37 appearances. His first Champions League start had come against Porto on 4 October 2023, aged 16 years and 83 days. He therefore had time to accumulate goals over several campaigns while still eligible for the teenage record. He turns 20 in July 2027.
Yamal was born in Spain and represents Spain in international football. His father is Moroccan and his mother is from Equatorial Guinea. For readers following players with family ties to Africa, that distinction matters here. The goals in this record came while playing club football for Barcelona, and international goals do not enter the total.
Villa were still only one goal behind at the interval. Raphinha scored twice after the break to complete Barcelona’s 3–0 victory. Although the result and the record came on the same night, the two later goals belonged to Raphinha. The goalscorers’ list does not show a Yamal hat-trick.
There are two separate questions to ask when another teenager scores in Europe. Which competition was the goal in, and had the player turned 20 when he scored it? For the next player chasing this mark, 14 eligible goals would equal Yamal’s current total. A 15th would take the lead if the record had stayed at 14 in the meantime.
