A traveller asked for an unexpected payment at Abuja airport should be able to identify an official counter and ask what the charge covers. That practical problem was central to a 4 November stakeholder meeting at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where FAAN and SERVICOM promoted the Operation Air Clean campaign against touting and extortion.
The campaign did not begin this week. SERVICOM’s account traces its earlier sensitisation to Lagos airport on 14 August 2025. Wednesday’s meeting extended that effort in Abuja. The report identifies requests for unofficial assistance fees and impersonation of airport or airline staff among the practices officials want passengers and genuine service providers to report.
FAAN’s customer-service manager, Monica Alphonse, urged passengers to use official help points, clarify charges before paying and ask for official receipts. She also warned against giving passports or valuables to unauthorised people. These are the authority’s stated precautions; the meeting supplies no evidence that harassment has ended or that every complaint is resolved.
SERVICOM proposed additional measures, including QR codes for reporting misconduct, clearer signs showing approved charges and monitoring of complaint response times. The statement presents these as proposals. It does not establish that a new QR system is operating at every airport. An announcement about improving service is different from a service a passenger can already use.
FAAN already publishes a Passenger Experience Hub with directions to support desks and a link to its official WhatsApp assistance. Its Abuja guide places the international-departure desk in the concourse, to the right of the main flight-information displays. At domestic departures, the listed desk is on the left after entering through the main doors.
What it means for you. Open the authority’s passenger-help page and choose your airport before relying on an unsolicited helper. The page says its support handles complaints, directions, lost property and accessibility assistance. It does not provide live flight updates: check those with your airline. The published contact routes were inspected for this report, but their response times were not tested.
