Lagos boat operators are asking the next state administration to put more landing places and refuelling points within reach of waterfront communities. Their appeal also covers boats that can no longer work at full capacity because an engine has failed or a vessel has been damaged. For passengers, the two problems can have the same result: an intended journey that an operator cannot provide.
The Lagos chapter of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria raised the requests at a political awareness meeting held with its national leadership over the weekend. The Guardian reported the proposals on 2 November. Babatunde Segun, the deputy chairman of the state chapter, said communities further from existing facilities particularly needed attention.
Segun welcomed earlier state investment in water transport. He asked the next administration to extend that work to locations that still lack adequate facilities. A jetty gives people somewhere to board and land. A fuel point serves a different purpose for the operator who must get a boat ready for its next journey.
The operators also want subsidies for engines and loan repayments that affected businesses can manage. Segun described operators who had lost boats or whose engines no longer worked properly. For them, installing equipment on a boat they already own could be as important as building a place for passengers to wait.
The association also called for continued investment in safety on the water. Its argument was that a stronger service could give commuters another way around Lagos and ease pressure on its roads. The reports describe proposals put to government. They do not give an approved budget, new departure times or a date for opening a particular jetty.
What it means for you: if you rely on a boat for work or school, keep your operator’s current boarding point and timetable as your reference when planning a trip. The association’s request is useful for understanding what operators want changed. On its own it gives passengers no new service to book or lower fare to count on.
